Etiquette of ziyarah

  1. Perform ghusl (the ritual bath) before setting out or before entering, and wear clean clothes.
  2. Walk calmly and humbly, occupied with remembrance of God (takbir, tahlil and salawat).
  3. At the door, recite the permission for entering (idhn al-dukhul) and enter with a softened heart.
  4. Recite the ziyarah, then pray two rak‘as of the ziyarah prayer and supplicate for yourself, your parents and all believers.
  5. If you cannot travel, many ziyarat may be recited from afar, facing towards the shrine.
