Ziyarah of Imam ‘Ali al-Rida
A short ziyarah (Ibn Qulawayh)
Mafatih al-Jinan gives a long first ziyarah of Imam al-Rida (see the link to the full text) and the shorter ziyarat below. Ibn Qulawayh reports from one of the Imams: when you come to the grave of Imam al-Rida, say:
اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُوسَى الرِّضَا الْمُرْتَضَى
O God, bless ‘Ali son of Musa al-Rida, the approved one,
الْإِمَامِ التَّقِيِّ النَّقِيِّ
the God-fearing, pure Imam,
وَحُجَّتِكَ عَلَى مَنْ فَوْقَ الْأَرْضِ وَمَنْ تَحْتَ الثَّرَى
Your proof over those upon the earth and those beneath the soil,
الصِّدِّيقِ الشَّهِيدِ
the truthful one, the martyr,
صَلَاةً كَثِيرَةً تَامَّةً زَاكِيَةً
with abundant, complete and pure blessings,
مُتَوَاصِلَةً مُتَوَاتِرَةً مُتَرَادِفَةً
continuous, unbroken, one after another,
كَأَفْضَلِ مَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِكَ
like the best You have bestowed on any of Your friends.
Another ziyarah (al-Mufid, al-Muqni‘a)
Al-Mufid: after the ghusl of ziyarah, in your cleanest clothes, stand at his grave and say:
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ اللّٰهِ وَابْنَ وَلِيِّهِ
Peace be upon you, O friend of God and son of His friend.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حُجَّةَ اللّٰهِ وَابْنَ حُجَّتِهِ
Peace be upon you, O proof of God and son of His proof.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا إِمَامَ الْهُدَى وَالْعُرْوَةَ الْوُثْقَى
Peace be upon you, O Imam of guidance and the firmest handhold,
وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
and the mercy of God and His blessings.
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ مَضَيْتَ عَلَى مَا مَضَى عَلَيْهِ آبَاؤُكَ الطَّاهِرُونَ
I bear witness that you passed away upon what your pure forefathers passed away upon,
صَلَوَاتُ اللّٰهِ عَلَيْهِمْ
the blessings of God be upon them;
لَمْ تُؤْثِرْ عَمًى عَلَى هُدًى
you never preferred blindness to guidance
وَلَمْ تَمِلْ مِنْ حَقٍّ إِلَى بَاطِلٍ
nor inclined from truth to falsehood;
وَأَنَّكَ نَصَحْتَ لِلّٰهِ وَلِرَسُولِهِ وَأَدَّيْتَ الْأَمَانَةَ
and that you gave sincere counsel to God and His Messenger and fulfilled the trust.
فَجَزَاكَ اللّٰهُ عَنِ الْإِسْلَامِ وَأَهْلِهِ خَيْرَ الْجَزَاءِ
So may God reward you on behalf of Islam and its people with the best of rewards.
أَتَيْتُكَ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي زَائِراً عَارِفاً بِحَقِّكَ
I have come to you — may my father and mother be your ransom — as a visitor, knowing your right,
مُوَالِياً لِأَوْلِيَائِكَ مُعَادِياً لِأَعْدَائِكَ
befriending your friends, opposing your enemies;
فَاشْفَعْ لِي عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ
so intercede for me with your Lord.
Then lean over the grave and kiss it, rest both sides of your face on it, then move to the side of the head and say:
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مَوْلَايَ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللّٰهِ
Peace be upon you, O my master, O son of the Messenger of God,
وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
and the mercy of God and His blessings.
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ الْإِمَامُ الْهَادِي وَالْوَلِيُّ الْمُرْشِدُ
I bear witness that you are the guiding Imam and the directing friend.
أَبْرَأُ إِلَى اللّٰهِ مِنْ أَعْدَائِكَ
I disassociate myself before God from your enemies
وَأَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَى اللّٰهِ بِوِلَايَتِكَ
and seek nearness to God through your guardianship.
صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْكَ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
God bless you, and the mercy of God and His blessings.
Farewell
Then pray the ziyarah prayer and whatever else you wish. To bid him farewell say:
لَا جَعَلَهُ اللّٰهُ آخِرَ تَسْلِيمِي عَلَيْكَ
May God not make this my last greeting to you.
Or, if you wish, say:
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ اللّٰهِ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
Peace be upon you, O friend of God, and the mercy of God and His blessings.
اَللّٰهُمَّ لَا تَجْعَلْهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنْ زِيَارَتِي ابْنَ نَبِيِّكَ وَحُجَّتِكَ عَلَى خَلْقِكَ
O God, do not make this my last visit to the son of Your Prophet and Your proof over Your creation;
وَاجْمَعْنِي وَإِيَّاهُ فِي جَنَّتِكَ
bring me and him together in Your Paradise,
وَاحْشُرْنِي مَعَهُ وَفِي حِزْبِهِ مَعَ الشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ وَحَسُنَ أُولٰئِكَ رَفِيقاً
and raise me with him and in his party, with the martyrs and the righteous — and how excellent they are as companions (cf. 4:69).
وَأَسْتَوْدِعُكَ اللّٰهَ وَأَسْتَرْعِيكَ وَأَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامَ
I commend you to God, place myself in your care, and greet you with peace.
آمَنَّا بِاللّٰهِ وَبِالرَّسُولِ وَبِمَا جِئْتَ بِهِ وَدَلَلْتَ عَلَيْهِ
We believe in God, in the Messenger and in what you brought and guided to;
فَاكْتُبْنَا مَعَ الشَّاهِدِينَ
so write us among the witnesses.
