Ziyarah of Imam ‘Ali al-Hadi
Entering the shrine in Samarra
Having performed the ghusl of ziyarah, when you reach the door of the holy shrine ask permission and say:
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللّٰهِ
May I enter, O Prophet of God?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
May I enter, O Commander of the Faithful?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا فَاطِمَةُ الزَّهْرَاءُ
May I enter, O Fatima al-Zahra,
سَيِّدَةَ نِسَاءِ الْعَالَمِينَ
mistress of the women of the worlds?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلَايَ الْحَسَنُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
May I enter, O my master al-Hasan son of ‘Ali?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلَايَ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
May I enter, O my master al-Husayn son of ‘Ali?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلَايَ عَلِيُّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ
May I enter, O my master ‘Ali son of al-Husayn?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلَايَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
May I enter, O my master Muhammad son of ‘Ali?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلَايَ جَعْفَرُ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ
May I enter, O my master Ja‘far son of Muhammad?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلَايَ مُوسَىٰ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ
May I enter, O my master Musa son of Ja‘far?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلَايَ عَلِيُّ بْنَ مُوسَىٰ
May I enter, O my master ‘Ali son of Musa?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلَايَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
May I enter, O my master Muhammad son of ‘Ali?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلَايَ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ
May I enter, O my master, O Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali son of Muhammad?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلَايَ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَسَنُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
May I enter, O my master, O Abu Muhammad al-Hasan son of ‘Ali?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَلَائِكَةَ اللّٰهِ
May I enter, O angels of God
الْمُوَكَّلِينَ بِهٰذَا الْحَرَمِ الشَّرِيفِ
appointed to this noble sanctuary?
Then enter, right foot first, stand at the grave of Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Hadi facing it, with the qibla behind you, and say one hundred times:
اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ
God is great.
The ziyarah of Imam ‘Ali al-Hadi
Then say:
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ
Peace be upon you, O Abu al-Hasan,
عَلِيُّ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ
‘Ali son of Muhammad,
الزَّكِيُّ الرَّاشِدُ
the pure, the rightly guided,
النُّورُ الثَّاقِبُ
the piercing light,
وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهٗ
and the mercy of God and His blessings.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا صَفِيَّ اللّٰهِ
Peace be upon you, O chosen friend of God.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سِرَّ اللّٰهِ
Peace be upon you, O secret of God.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حَبْلَ اللّٰهِ
Peace be upon you, O rope of God.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا آلَ اللّٰهِ
Peace be upon you, O family of God.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا خِيَرَةَ اللّٰهِ
Peace be upon you, O chosen of God.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا صَفْوَةَ اللّٰهِ
Peace be upon you, O elect of God.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَمِينَ اللّٰهِ
Peace be upon you, O trustee of God.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حَقَّ اللّٰهِ
Peace be upon you, O right of God.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حَبِيبَ اللّٰهِ
Peace be upon you, O beloved of God.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نُورَ الْأَنْوَارِ
Peace be upon you, O light of lights.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا زَيْنَ الْأَبْرَارِ
Peace be upon you, O adornment of the righteous.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سَلِيلَ الْأَخْيَارِ
Peace be upon you, O offspring of the best.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا عُنْصُرَ الْأَطْهَارِ
Peace be upon you, O root of the pure.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حُجَّةَ الرَّحْمٰنِ
Peace be upon you, O proof of the All-Merciful.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رُكْنَ الْإِيمَانِ
Peace be upon you, O pillar of faith.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مَوْلَىٰ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Peace be upon you, O master of the believers.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ الصَّالِحِينَ
Peace be upon you, O friend of the righteous.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا عَلَمَ الْهُدَىٰ
Peace be upon you, O banner of guidance.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حَلِيفَ التُّقَىٰ
Peace be upon you, O ally of piety.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا عَمُودَ الدِّينِ
Peace be upon you, O pillar of the religion.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ خَاتَمِ النَّبِيِّينَ
Peace be upon you, O son of the Seal of the Prophets.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ سَيِّدِ الْوَصِيِّينَ
Peace be upon you, O son of the master of the successors.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ فَاطِمَةَ الزَّهْرَاءِ
Peace be upon you, O son of Fatima al-Zahra,
سَيِّدَةِ نِسَاءِ الْعَالَمِينَ
mistress of the women of the worlds.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا الْأَمِينُ الْوَفِيُّ
Peace be upon you, O faithful trustee.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا الْعَلَمُ الرَّضِيُّ
Peace be upon you, O well-pleasing banner.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا الزَّاهِدُ التَّقِيُّ
Peace be upon you, O abstinent, God-fearing one.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا الْحُجَّةُ عَلَىٰ الْخَلْقِ أَجْمَعِينَ
Peace be upon you, O proof over all creation.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا التَّالِي لِلْقُرْآنِ
Peace be upon you, O reciter of the Qur’an.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا الْمُبَيِّنُ لِلْحَلَالِ مِنَ الْحَرَامِ
Peace be upon you, O one who makes clear the lawful from the unlawful.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا الْوَلِيُّ النَّاصِحُ
Peace be upon you, O sincere friend.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا الطَّرِيقُ الْوَاضِحُ
Peace be upon you, O clear path.
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّجْمُ اللَّائِحُ
Peace be upon you, O gleaming star.
أَشْهَدُ يَا مَوْلَايَ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ
I bear witness, O my master, O Abu al-Hasan,
أَنَّكَ حُجَّةُ اللّٰهِ عَلَىٰ خَلْقِهٖ
that you are the proof of God over His creation,
وَخَلِيفَتُهٗ فِي بَرِيَّتِهٖ
His vicegerent among His creatures,
وَأَمِينُهُ فِي بِلَادِهٖ
His trustee in His lands
وَشَاهِدُهٗ عَلَىٰ عِبَادِهٖ
and His witness over His servants.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ كَلِمَةُ التَّقْوَىٰ
I bear witness that you are the word of piety,
وَبَابُ الْهُدَىٰ
the door of guidance,
وَالْعُرْوَةُ الْوُثْقَىٰ
the firmest handhold,
وَالْحُجَّةُ عَلَىٰ مَنْ فَوْقَ الْأَرْضِ
and the proof over those upon the earth
وَمَنْ تَحْتَ الثَّرَىٰ
and those beneath the soil.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ الْمُطَهَّرُ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ
I bear witness that you are purified of sins,
الْمُبَرَّأُ مِنَ الْعُيُوبِ
cleared of faults,
وَالْمُخْتَصُّ بِكَرَامَةِ اللّٰهِ
singled out for God’s honour,
وَالْمَحْبُوُّ بِحُجَّةِ اللّٰهِ
granted God’s proof,
وَالْمَوْهُوبُ لَهٗ كَلِمَةُ اللّٰهِ
given the word of God,
وَالرُّكْنُ الَّذِي يَلْجَأُ إِلَيْهِ الْعِبَادُ
and the pillar to which the servants turn for refuge
وَتُحْيَىٰ بِهِ الْبِلَادُ
and by which the lands are revived.
وَأَشْهَدُ يَا مَوْلَايَ
I bear witness, O my master,
أَنِّي بِكَ وَبِآبَائِكَ وَأَبْنَائِكَ مُوقِنٌ مُقِرٌّ
that I believe with certainty in you, your forefathers and your sons, and affirm you,
وَلَكُمْ تَابِعٌ فِي ذَاتِ نَفْسِي
and that I follow you in my very self,
وَشَرَايِعِ دِينِي
in the laws of my religion,
وَخَاتِمَةِ عَمَلِي
in the end of my deeds,
وَمُنْقَلَبِي وَمَثْوَايَ
in my return and my final abode;
وَأَنِّي وَلِيٌّ لِمَنْ وَالَاكُمْ
that I am a friend of whoever befriends you
وَعَدُوٌّ لِمَنْ عَادَاكُمْ
and an enemy of whoever is hostile to you,
مُؤْمِنٌ بِسِرِّكُمْ وَعَلَانِيَتِكُمْ
believing in your secret and your open,
وَأَوَّلِكُمْ وَآخِرِكُمْ
in the first of you and the last of you.
بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي
May my father and mother be your ransom.
وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهٗ
And peace be upon you, and the mercy of God and His blessings.
Then kiss his grave, rest your right cheek on it, then your left, and say:
اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad,
وَصَلِّ عَلَىٰ حُجَّتِكَ الْوَفِيِّ
and bless Your faithful proof,
وَوَلِيِّكَ الزَّكِيِّ
Your pure friend,
وَأَمِينِكَ الْمُرْتَضَىٰ
Your approved trustee,
وَصَفِيِّكَ الْهَادِي
Your chosen guide,
وَصِرَاطِكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمِ
Your straight path,
وَالْجَادَّةِ الْعُظْمَىٰ
the great highway,
وَالطَّرِيقَةِ الْوُسْطَىٰ
the middle way,
نُورِ قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
the light of the hearts of the believers,
وَوَلِيِّ الْمُتَّقِينَ
the friend of the God-fearing
وَصَاحِبِ الْمُخْلِصِينَ
and companion of the sincere.
اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِهٖ
O God, bless our master Muhammad and his household,
وَصَلِّ عَلَىٰ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ
and bless ‘Ali son of Muhammad,
الرَّاشِدِ الْمَعْصُومِ مِنَ الزَّلَلِ
the rightly guided, protected from slips,
وَالطَّاهِرِ مِنَ الْخَلَلِ
pure of every flaw,
وَالْمُنْقَطِعِ إِلَيْكَ بِالْأَمَلِ
devoted to You alone in hope,
الْمَبْلُوِّ بِالْفِتَنِ
tried with trials,
وَالْمُخْتَبَرِ بِالْمِحَنِ
tested with afflictions,
وَالْمُمْتَحَنِ بِحُسْنِ الْبَلْوَىٰ
proven by bearing trial well
وَصَبْرِ الشَّكْوَىٰ
and by patience without complaint;
مُرْشِدِ عِبَادِكَ
the guide of Your servants,
وَبَرَكَةِ بِلَادِكَ
the blessing of Your lands,
وَمَحَلِّ رَحْمَتِكَ
the abode of Your mercy,
وَمُسْتَوْدَعِ حِكْمَتِكَ
the repository of Your wisdom,
وَالْقَائِدِ إِلَىٰ جَنَّتِكَ
the leader to Your Paradise,
الْعَالِمِ فِي بَرِيَّتِكَ
the knowing one among Your creatures,
وَالْهَادِي فِي خَلِيقَتِكَ
the guide among Your creation,
الَّذِي ارْتَضَيْتَهٗ وَانْتَجَبْتَهٗ
whom You approved and selected,
وَاخْتَرْتَهٗ لِمَقَامِ رَسُولِكَ فِي أُمَّتِهِ
and chose to stand in the place of Your Messenger among his community,
وَأَلْزَمْتَهُ حِفْظَ شَرِيعَتِهٖ
and charged with preserving the Messenger’s law.
فَاسْتَقَلَّ بِأَعْبَاءِ الْوَصِيَّةِ
He took up the burdens of succession,
نَاهِضاً بِهَا
rising to meet them
وَمُضْطَلِعاً بِحَمْلِهَا
and bearing their weight;
لَمْ يَعْثُرْ فِي مُشْكِلٍ
he never stumbled at a problem
وَلَا هَفَا فِي مُعْضِلٍ
nor slipped at a dilemma,
بَلْ كَشَفَ الْغُمَّةَ
but dispelled the gloom,
وَسَدَّ الْفُرْجَةَ
closed the breach
وَأَدَّىٰ الْمُفْتَرَضَ
and fulfilled what was obligatory.
اَللّٰهُمَّ فَكَمَا أَقْرَرْتَ نَاظِرَ نَبِيِّكَ بِهٖ
O God, just as You delighted the eye of Your Prophet through him,
فَرَقِّهٖ دَرَجَتَهٗ
raise his rank,
وَأَجْزِلْ لَدَيْكَ مَثُوبَتَهٗ
make his reward abundant with You,
وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ
bless him,
وَبَلِّغْهُ مِنَّا تَحِيَّةً وَسَلَاماً
convey to him from us greeting and peace,
وَآتِنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ فِي مُوَالَاتِهٖ فَضْلًا وَإِحْسَاناً
and grant us from Your presence, through our devotion to him, grace and kindness,
وَمَغْفِرَةً وَرِضْوَاناً
forgiveness and good pleasure;
إِنَّكَ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ
surely You are the Lord of great bounty.
