Du‘a’ al-‘Ahd

Du‘a’ al-‘Ahd

Recited every morning, after the dawn prayer:

In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful.

O God, Lord of the mighty light, Lord of the lofty Seat,

Lord of the swelling sea, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel and the Psalms,

Lord of the shade and the heat, Revealer of the mighty Qur’an,

Lord of the angels brought near, of the prophets and the messengers:

O God, I ask You by Your noble Face, by the light of Your radiant Face

and by Your eternal kingdom, O Ever-Living, O Self-Subsisting; I ask You by Your name

through which the heavens and the earths shine,

and by Your name through which the first and the last are set right.

O Living before every living thing, O Living after every living thing,

O Living when there was no living thing, O Giver of life to the dead and Taker of life from the living, O Living One, there is no god but You.

O God, convey to our master, the Imam, the guide, the guided one, who rises by Your command —

the blessings of God be upon him and upon his pure forefathers —

on behalf of all believing men and women in the easts and wests of the earth,

its plains and its mountains, its land and its sea, and on behalf of me and my parents, blessings

equal to the weight of God’s Throne and the ink of His words, and all that His knowledge has counted and His Book has encompassed.

O God, on the morning of this day of mine and for as long as I live, I renew for him a pledge,

a covenant and an oath of allegiance upon my neck, from which I will never turn away or waver.

O God, make me among his helpers and supporters, those who defend him,

those who hasten to him to fulfil his needs, those who carry out his commands,

those who protect him, those who race to do his will, and those martyred before him.

O God, if death, which You have made for Your servants

an inevitable decree, comes between me and him, then bring me out of my grave wrapped in my shroud, my sword drawn,

my spear bared, answering the call of the caller in town and desert.

O God, show me the rightly guided countenance and the praiseworthy brow;

brighten my eyes with a look at him; hasten his relief,

make his emergence easy, widen his way, and lead me along his path;

carry out his command, strengthen his back, and through him, O God, make Your lands flourish and revive Your servants;

for You have said, and Your word is the truth: “Corruption has appeared on land and sea

because of what people’s hands have earned” (30:41). So, O God, make manifest for us Your friend and the son of Your Prophet’s daughter,

who bears the name of Your Messenger, so that he finds nothing of falsehood without tearing it apart,

and establishes the truth and makes it firm. O God, make him a refuge for the oppressed among Your servants,

a helper for whoever finds no helper but You, a renewer of the laws of Your Book that have been abandoned,

and a builder of the signs of Your religion and the ways of Your Prophet that have come down to us,

God bless him and his family; and make him, O God, among those You have fortified against the might of the aggressors.

O God, gladden Your Prophet Muhammad, God bless him and his family, with the sight of him

and of those who follow him in his call, and have mercy on our helplessness after him.

O God, remove this grief from this community through his presence,

and hasten his appearance for us; they see it as far off, and we see it as near (cf. 70:6–7),

by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

Then strike your right thigh with your hand three times, saying each time:

Hasten, hasten, O my master, O Master of the Age!
