Ziyarat Ashura

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O Aba ‘Abd Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of God.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا خِيَرَةَ اللهِ وَابْنَ خِيَرَتِهٖ

Peace be upon you, O chosen one of God and son of His chosen one.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَابْنَ اَمِيْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful

وَابْنَ سَيِّدِ الْوَصِيِّيْنَ

and son of the master of the successors.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَابْنَ فَاطِمَةَ سَيِّدَةِ نِسَآءِ الْعَالَمِيْنَ

Peace be upon you, O son of Fatima, mistress of the women of the worlds.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ثَارَ اللهِ وَابْنَ ثَارِهٖ وَالْوِتْرَ الْمَوْتُوْرَ

Peace be upon you, O blood of God unavenged, son of His blood unavenged, O one wronged and left alone.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى الْاَرْوَاحِ الَّتِيْ حَلَّتْ بِفِنَآئِكَ

Peace be upon you and upon the souls that alighted in your courtyard.

عَلَيْكُمْ مِنِّي جَمِيْعًا سَلَامُ اللهِ اَبَدًا

Upon you all from me be the peace of God for ever,

مَا بَقِيْتُ وَبَقِيَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

as long as I remain and the night and day remain.

يَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

O Aba ‘Abd Allah,

لَقَدْ عَظُمَتِ الرَّزِيَّةُ وَجَلَّتْ

great indeed is the tragedy, and grievous,

وَعَظُمَتِ الْمُصِيْبَةُ بِكَ عَلَيْنَا

and great is the calamity of your loss for us

وَعَلٰى جَمِيْعِ اَهْلِ الْاِسْلَامِ

and for all the people of Islam;

وَجَلَّتْ وَعَظُمَتْ مُصِيْبَتُكَ فِي السَّمٰوَاتِ

grievous and great is your calamity in the heavens,

عَلٰى جَمِيْعِ اَهْلِ السَّمَاوَاتِ

for all the dwellers of the heavens.

فَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً اَسَّسَتْ اَسَاسَ الظُّلْمِ وَالْجَوْرِ عَلَيْكُمْ اَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ

May God curse a people who laid the foundations of oppression and injustice against you, the People of the Household;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً دَفَعَتْكُمْ عَنْ مَقَامِكُمْ

may God curse a people who pushed you away from your station

وَاَزَالَتْكُمْ عَنْ مَرَاتِبِكُمُ الَّتِيْ رَتَّبَكُمُ اللهُ فِيْهَا

and removed you from the ranks in which God had placed you;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكُمْ

may God curse a people who killed you;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ الْمُمَهِّدِيْنَ لَهُمْ

and may God curse those who paved the way for them

بِالتَّمْكِيْنِ مِنْ قِتَالِكُمْ

by enabling them to fight you.

بَرِئْتُ اِلَى اللهِ وَاِلَيْكُمْ مِنْهُمْ

I disassociate myself, before God and before you, from them,

وَمِنْ اَشْيَاعِهِمْ وَاَتْبَاعِهِمْ وَاَوْلِيَآئِهِمْ

from their followers, their adherents and their allies.

يَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

O Aba ‘Abd Allah,

اِنِّيْ سِلْمٌ لِمَنْ سَالَمَكُمْ

I am at peace with whoever is at peace with you

وَحَرْبٌ لِمَنْ حَارَبَكُمْ اِلٰى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ

and at war with whoever wars against you, until the Day of Resurrection.

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ آلَ زِيَادٍ وَآلَ مَرْوَانَ

May God curse the family of Ziyad and the family of Marwan;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ بَنِيْ اُمَيَّةَ قَاطِبَةً

may God curse the Umayyads, all of them;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ ابْنَ مَرْجَانَةَ

may God curse Ibn Marjana;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ عُمَرَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ

may God curse ‘Umar ibn Sa‘d;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ شِمْرًا

may God curse Shimr;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً اَسْرَجَتْ

and may God curse a people who saddled

وَاَلْجَمَتْ وَتَنَقَّبَتْ لِقِتَالِكَ

and bridled their horses and put on their masks to fight you.

بِاَبِيْ اَنْتَ وَاُمِّي لَقَدْ عَظُمَ مُصَابِيْ بِكَ

May my father and mother be ransomed for you; great indeed is my grief for you.

فَاَسْئَلُ اللهَ الَّذِيْ اَكْرَمَ مَقَامَكَ

So I ask God, who honoured your station

وَاَكْرَمَنِيْ بِكَ اَنْ يَرْزُقَنِيْ طَلَبَ ثَارِكَ

and honoured me through you, to grant me to seek redress for your blood

مَعَ اِمَامٍ مَنْصُوْرٍ مِنْ اَهْلِ بَيْتِ مُحَمَّدٍ

with a victorious Imam from the Household of Muhammad,

صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهٖ

may God bless him and his family.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِيْ عِنْدَكَ وَجِيْهًا بِالْحُسَيْنِ

O God, make me honoured before You through al-Husayn,

عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فِيْ الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَةِ

peace be upon him, in this world and the hereafter.

يَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

O Aba ‘Abd Allah,

اِنِّي اَتَقَرَّبُ اِلَى اللهِ

I seek nearness to God,

وَاِلٰى رَسُوْلِهٖ وَاِلٰى اَمِيْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

to His Messenger, to the Commander of the Faithful,

وَاِلٰى فَاطِمَةَ وَاِلَى الْحَسَنِ وَاِلَيْكَ

to Fatima, to al-Hasan and to you,

بِمُوَالَاتِكَ وَبِالْبَرَآئَةِ مِمَّنْ قَاتَلَكَ وَنَصَبَ لَكَ الْحَرْبَ

through love for you and disassociation from whoever fought you and waged war against you,

وَبِالْبَرَآئَةِ مِمَّنْ اَسَّسَ اَسَاسَ الظُّلْمِ وَالْجَوْرِ عَلَيْكُمْ

and disassociation from whoever laid the foundations of oppression and injustice against you;

وَاَبْرَأُ اِلَى اللهِ وَاِلٰى رَسُوْلِهٖ

and I disassociate myself, before God and His Messenger,

مِمَّنْ اَسَّسَ اَسَاسَ ذٰلِكَ وَبَنٰى عَلَيْهِ بُنْيَانَهٗ

from whoever laid those foundations, built upon them

وَجَرٰى فِيْ ظُلْمِهٖ وَجَوْرِهٖ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَلٰى اَشْيَاعِكُمْ

and carried on in his oppression and injustice against you and against your followers.

بَرِئْتُ اِلَى اللهِ وَاِلَيْكُمْ مِنْهُمْ

I disassociate myself, before God and before you, from them,

وَاَتَقَرَّبُ اِلَى اللهِ ثُمَّ اِلَيْكُمْ

and I seek nearness to God and then to you

بِمُوَالَاتِكُمْ وَمُوَالَاةِ وَلِيِّكُمْ

through love for you and for your friend,

وَبِالْبَرَآئَةِ مِنْ اَعْدَائِكُمْ

through disassociation from your enemies

وَالنَّاصِبِيْنَ لَكُمُ الْحَرْبَ

and from those who waged war against you,

وَبِالْبَرَائَةِ مِنْ اَشْيَاعِهِمْ وَاَتْبَاعِهِمْ

and through disassociation from their followers and adherents.

اِنِّي سِلْمٌ لِمَنْ سَالَمَكُمْ

I am at peace with whoever is at peace with you,

وَحَرْبٌ لِمَنْ حَارَبَكُمْ

at war with whoever wars against you,

وَوَلِيٌّ لِمَنْ وَالَاكُمْ

a friend to whoever befriends you

وَعَدُوٌّ لِمَنْ عَادَاكُمْ

and an enemy to whoever opposes you.

فَاَسْئَلُ اللهَ الَّذِيْ اَكْرَمَنِيْ بِمَعْرِفَتِكُمْ

So I ask God, who honoured me with knowing you

وَمَعْرِفَةِ اَوْلِيَآئِكُمْ

and knowing your friends,

وَرَزَقَنِيَ الْبَرَآئَةَ مِنْ اَعْدَآئِكُمْ

and granted me disassociation from your enemies,

اَنْ يَجْعَلَنِيْ مَعَكُمْ فِيْ الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَةِ

to place me with you in this world and the hereafter,

وَاَنْ يُثَبِّتَ لِي عِنْدَكُمْ قَدَمَ صِدْقٍ

and to make firm for me with you a footing of truth

فِيْ الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَةِ

in this world and the hereafter.

وَاَسْئَلُهُ اَنْ يُبَلِّغَنِي الْمَقَامَ الْمَحْمُوْدَ لَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللهِ

I ask Him to bring me to the praised station that you have with God,

وَاَنْ يَرْزُقَنِيْ طَلَبَ ثَارِيْ

and to grant me to seek redress for my blood

مَعَ اِمَامٍ هُدًى ظَاهِرٍ نَاطِقٍ بِالْحَقِّ مِنْكُمْ

with a guiding Imam from among you, manifest and speaking the truth.

وَاَسْئَلُ اللهَ بِحَقِّكُمْ وَبِالشَّاْنِ الَّذِيْ لَكُمْ عِنْدَهٗ

I ask God, by your right and by the standing you have with Him,

اَنْ يُعْطِيَنِيْ بِمُصَابِيْ بِكُمْ

to give me, for my grief over you,

اَفْضَلَ مَا يُعْطِيْ مُصَابًا بِمُصِيْبَتِهٖ

the best that He gives to anyone grieved by a calamity —

مُصِيْبَةً مَا اَعْظَمَهَا

a calamity, how great it is,

وَاَعْظَمَ رَزِيَّتَهَا فِيْ الْاِسْلَامِ

and how great its tragedy in Islam

وَفِيْ جَمِيْعِ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ

and in all the heavens and the earth!

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِيْ فِيْ مَقَامِيْ هٰذَا مِمَّنْ

O God, make me, in this station of mine, one of those

تَنَالُهٗ مِنْكَ صَلَوَاتٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ

who receive from You blessings, mercy and forgiveness.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ مَحْيَايَ مَحْيَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

O God, make my life the life of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad,

وَمَمَاتِيْ مَمَاتَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

and my death the death of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنَّ هٰذَا يَوْمٌ تَبَرَّكَتْ بِهٖ بَنُوْ اُمَيَّةَ

O God, this is a day which the Umayyads took as a blessing,

وَابْنُ آكِلَةِ الْاَكْبَادِ

and the son of the liver-eater,

اللَّعِيْنُ ابْنُ اللَّعِيْنِ عَلٰى لِسَانِكَ

the accursed son of the accursed, on Your tongue

وَلِسَانِ نَبِيِّكَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهٖ

and the tongue of Your Prophet, may God bless him and his family,

فِيْ كُلِّ مَوْطِنٍ وَمَوْقِفٍ

in every place and every stand

وَقَفَ فِيْهِ نَبِيُّكَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهٖ

in which Your Prophet stood, may God bless him and his family.

اَللّٰهُمَّ الْعَنْ اَبَا سُفْيَانَ وَمُعَاوِيَةَ

O God, curse Abu Sufyan, Mu‘awiya

وَيَزِيْدَ بْنَ مُعَاوِيَةَ

and Yazid son of Mu‘awiya;

عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْكَ اللَّعْنَةُ اَبَدَ الْآبِدِيْنَ

upon them be Your curse for ever and ever.

وَهٰذَا يَوْمٌ فَرِحَتْ بِهٖ آلُ زِيَادٍ وَآلُ مَرْوَانَ

And this is a day on which the family of Ziyad and the family of Marwan rejoiced

بِقَتْلِهِمُ الْحُسَيْنَ صَلَوَاتُ اللهِ عَلَيْهِ

at their killing of al-Husayn, the blessings of God be upon him.

اَللّٰهُمَّ فَضَاعِفْ عَلَيْهِمُ اللَّعْنَ مِنْكَ وَالْعَذَابَ الْاَلِيْمَ

O God, multiply upon them Your curse and the painful punishment.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّيْ اَتَقَرَّبُ اِلَيْكَ فِيْ هٰذَا الْيَوْمِ

O God, I seek nearness to You on this day,

وَفِيْ مَوْقِفِيْ هٰذَا وَاَيَّامِ حَيَاتِيْ

in this stand of mine and in all the days of my life,

بِالْبَرَآئَةِ مِنْهُمْ وَاللَّعْنَةِ عَلَيْهِمْ

through disassociation from them and cursing them,

وَبِالْمُوَالَاةِ لِنَبِيِّكَ وَآلِ نَبِيِّكَ

and through love for Your Prophet and the family of Your Prophet,

عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ

peace be upon him and upon them.

اَللّٰهُمَّ الْعَنْ اَوَّلَ ظَالِمٍ ظَلَمَ حَقَّ مُحَمَّدٍ

O God, curse the first oppressor who usurped the right of Muhammad

وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآخِرَ تَابِعٍ لَهٗ عَلٰى ذٰلِكَ

and the family of Muhammad, and the last who followed him in that.

اَللّٰهُمَّ الْعَنِ الْعِصَابَةَ الَّتِيْ جَاهَدَتِ الْحُسَيْنَ

O God, curse the band that fought al-Husayn,

وَشَايَعَتْ وَبَايَعَتْ وَتَابَعَتْ عَلٰى قَتْلِهٖ

and those who supported, pledged allegiance and followed in his killing.

اَللّٰهُمَّ الْعَنْهُمْ جَمِيْعًا

O God, curse them all.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O Aba ‘Abd Allah,

وَعَلَى الْاَرْوَاحِ الَّتِيْ حَلَّتْ بِفِنَآئِكَ

and upon the souls that alighted in your courtyard.

عَلَيْكَ مِنّي سَلَامُ اللهِ اَبَدًا

Upon you from me be the peace of God for ever,

مَا بَقِيْتُ وَبَقِيَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

as long as I remain and the night and day remain;

وَلَا جَعَلَهُ اللهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنِّي لِزِيَارَتِكُمْ

and may God not make this the last of my visits to you.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ

Peace be upon al-Husayn,

وَعَلٰى عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ

upon ‘Ali son of al-Husayn,

وَعَلٰى اَوْلَادِ الْحُسَيْنِ

upon the children of al-Husayn,

وَعَلٰى اَصْحَابِ الْحُسَيْنِ

and upon the companions of al-Husayn.

اَللّٰهُمَّ خُصَّ اَنْتَ اَوَّلَ ظَالِمٍ بِاللَّعْنِ مِنِّي

O God, single out the first oppressor with my curse,

وَابْدَأْ بِهٖ اَوَّلًا

and begin with him first,

ثُمَّ الثَّانِيَ وَالثَّالِثَ وَالرَّابِعَ

then the second, the third and the fourth.

اَللّٰهُمَّ الْعَنْ يَزِيْدَ خَامِسًا

O God, curse Yazid as the fifth,

وَالْعَنْ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ زِيَادٍ وَابْنَ مَرْجَانَةَ

and curse ‘Ubayd Allah son of Ziyad, Ibn Marjana,

وَعُمَرَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ وَشِمْرًا

‘Umar son of Sa‘d and Shimr,

وَآلَ اَبِيْ سُفْيَانَ وَآلَ زِيَادٍ

and the family of Abu Sufyan and the family of Ziyad

وَآلَ مَرْوَانَ اِلٰى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ

and the family of Marwan, until the Day of Resurrection.

اَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْدَ الشَّاكِرِيْنَ لَكَ عَلٰى مُصَابِهِمْ

O God, to You belongs praise, the praise of those who thank You, for their tragedy.

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ عَلٰى عَظِيْمِ رَزِيَّتِيْ

Praise be to God for my great grief.

اَللّٰهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِيْ شَفَاعَةَ الْحُسَيْنِ يَوْمَ الْوُرُوْدِ

O God, grant me the intercession of al-Husayn on the day of arrival,

وَثَبِّتْ لِيْ قَدَمَ صِدْقٍ عِنْدَكَ

and make firm for me a footing of truth with You

مَعَ الْحُسَيْنِ وَاَصْحَابِ الْحُسَيْنِ الَّذِيْنَ

with al-Husayn and the companions of al-Husayn, who

بَذَلُوْا مُهَجَهُمْ دُوْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ

gave up their lives for al-Husayn, peace be upon him.
