Ziyarah of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad
The ziyarah of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad
Imam al-Jawad is buried behind his grandfather. Standing at his grave, say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O friend of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حُجَّةَ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O proof of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نُورَ ٱللَّهِ فِي ظُلُمَاتِ ٱلأَرْضِ
Peace be upon you, O light of God in the darknesses of the earth.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ آبَائِكَ
Peace be upon you and upon your forefathers.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ أَبْنَائِكَ
Peace be upon you and upon your sons.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ أَوْلِيَائِكَ
Peace be upon you and upon your friends.
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ أَقَمْتَ ٱلصَّلاَةَ
I bear witness that you established the prayer,
وَآتَيْتَ ٱلزَّكَاةَ
gave the alms,
وَأَمَرْتَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ
enjoined what is right,
وَنَهَيْتَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنْكَرِ
forbade what is wrong,
وَتَلَوْتَ ٱلْكِتَابَ حَقَّ تِلاَوَتِهِ
recited the Book as it deserves to be recited,
وَجَاهَدْتَ فِي ٱللَّهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهِ
strove for God as He deserves to be striven for,
وَصَبَرْتَ عَلَىٰ ٱلأَذَىٰ فِي جَنْبِهِ
and bore harm patiently for His sake
حَتَّىٰ أَتَاكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ
until certainty came to you.
أَتَيْتُكَ زَائِراً
I have come to you as a visitor,
عَارِفاً بِحَقِّكَ
knowing your right,
مُوَالِياً لِأَوْلِيَائِكَ
befriending your friends,
مُعَادِياً لِأَعْدَائِكَ
opposing your enemies;
فَٱشْفَعْ لِي عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ
so intercede for me with your Lord.
Then kiss the grave and rest your cheeks on it; pray two rak‘as of ziyarah and whatever else you wish, then prostrate and say:
ٱرْحَمْ مَنْ أَسَاءَ وَٱقْتَرَفَ
Have mercy on one who has done wrong and committed sin,
وَٱسْتَكَانَ وَٱعْتَرَفَ
and has humbled himself and confessed.
Then turn onto your right cheek and say:
إِنْ كُنْتُ بِئْسَ ٱلْعَبْدُ
If I have been an evil servant,
فَأَنْتَ نِعْمَ ٱلرَّبُّ
You are an excellent Lord.
Then onto your left cheek and say:
عَظُمَ ٱلذَّنْبُ مِنْ عَبْدِكَ
The sin of Your servant has become great,
فَلْيَحْسُنِ ٱلْعَفْوُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ
so let the pardon that comes from You be beautiful,
يَا كَرِيمُ
O Generous One.
Then return to prostration and say one hundred times:
شُكْراً

Another ziyarah (Sayyid Ibn Tawus)
When you have visited Imam al-Kazim, stand at the grave of Imam al-Jawad, kiss it and say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ
Peace be upon you, O Abu Ja‘far,
مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
Muhammad son of ‘Ali,
ٱلْبَرَّ ٱلتَّقِيَّ
the righteous, the God-fearing,
ٱلْإِمَامَ ٱلْوَفِيَّ
the faithful Imam.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلرَّضِيُّ ٱلزَّكِيُّ
Peace be upon you, O well-pleasing and pure one.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O friend of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نَجِيَّ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O confidant of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سَفِيرَ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O envoy of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سِرَّ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O secret of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ضِيَاءَ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O radiance of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سَنَاءَ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O splendour of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا كَلِمَةَ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O word of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَحْمَةَ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O mercy of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلنُّورُ ٱلسَّاطِعُ
Peace be upon you, O shining light.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْبَدْرُ ٱلطَّالِعُ
Peace be upon you, O rising full moon.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلطَّيِّبُ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبِينَ
Peace be upon you, O good one, born of the good.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلطَّاهِرُ مِنَ ٱلْمُطَهَّرِينَ
Peace be upon you, O pure one, born of the purified.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلآيَةُ ٱلْعُظْمَىٰ
Peace be upon you, O greatest sign.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْحُجَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ
Peace be upon you, O greatest proof.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُ مِنَ ٱلزَّلاَّتِ
Peace be upon you, O one purified of slips.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُنَزَّهُ عَنِ ٱلْمُعْضِلاَتِ
Peace be upon you, O one kept free of perplexities.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْعَلِيُّ عَنْ نَقْصِ ٱلأَوْصَافِ
Peace be upon you, O one exalted above deficient attributes.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلرَّضِيُّ عِنْدَ ٱلأَشْرَافِ
Peace be upon you, O one well-pleasing in the eyes of the noble.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا عَمُودَ ٱلدِّينِ
Peace be upon you, O pillar of the religion.
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ وَلِيُّ ٱللَّهِ
I bear witness that you are the friend of God
وَحُجَّتُهُ فِي أَرْضِهِ
and His proof on His earth,
وَأَنَّكَ جَنْبُ ٱللَّهِ وَخِيَرَةُ ٱللَّهِ
that you are the Side of God and the chosen of God,
وَمُسْتَوْدَعُ عِلْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَعِلْمِ ٱلأَنْبِيَاءِ
the repository of the knowledge of God and the knowledge of the prophets,
وَرُكْنُ ٱلإِيمَانِ وَتَرْجُمَانُ ٱلْقُرْآنِ
the pillar of faith and the interpreter of the Qur’an.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ عَلَىٰ ٱلْحَقِّ وَٱلْهُدَىٰ
I bear witness that whoever follows you is upon truth and guidance,
وَأَنَّ مَنْ أَنْكَرَكَ وَنَصَبَ لَكَ ٱلْعَدَاوَةَ
and that whoever denies you and sets up enmity against you
عَلَىٰ ٱلضَّلاَلَةِ وَٱلرَّدَىٰ
is upon misguidance and ruin.
أَبْرَأُ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ وَإِلَيْكَ مِنْهُمْ فِي ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ
I disassociate myself from them before God and before you, in this world and the hereafter.
وَٱلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ مَا بَقِيتُ وَبَقِيَ ٱللَّيْلُ وَٱلنَّهَارُ
And peace be upon you as long as I remain and as long as night and day remain.
And in sending blessings upon him say:
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ
O God, bless Muhammad and his household,
وَصَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ
and bless Muhammad son of ‘Ali,
ٱلزَّكِيِّ ٱلتَّقِيِّ
the pure, the God-fearing,
وَٱلْبَرِّ ٱلْوَفِيِّ
the righteous, the faithful,
وَٱلْمُهَذَّبِ ٱلنَّقِيِّ
the refined, the spotless,
هَادِي ٱلأُمَّةِ
the guide of the community,
وَوَارِثِ ٱلأَئِمَّةِ
the heir of the Imams,
وَخَازِنِ ٱلرَّحْمَةِ
the treasurer of mercy,
وَيَنْبُوعِ ٱلْحِكْمَةِ
the spring of wisdom,
وَقَائِدِ ٱلْبَرَكَةِ
the leader of blessing,
وَعَدِيلِ ٱلْقُرْآنِ فِي ٱلطَّاعَةِ
the equal of the Qur’an in obedience,
وَوَاحِدِ ٱلأَوْصِيَاءِ فِي ٱلإِخْلاَصِ وَٱلْعِبَادَةِ
unique among the successors in sincerity and worship,
وَحُجَّتِكَ ٱلْعُلْيَا
Your highest proof,
وَمَثَلِكَ ٱلأَعْلَىٰ
Your loftiest example,
وَكَلِمَتِكَ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ
Your fairest word,
ٱلدَّاعِي إِلَيْكَ
the one who calls to You
وَٱلدَّالِّ عَلَيْكَ
and points the way to You,
ٱلَّذِي نَصَبْتَهُ عَلَماً لِعِبَادِكَ
whom You set up as a landmark for Your servants,
وَمُتَرْجِماً لِكِتَابِكَ
an interpreter of Your Book,
وَصَادِعاً بِأَمْرِكَ
one who openly proclaims Your command,
وَنَاصِراً لِدِينِكَ
a helper of Your religion,
وَحُجَّةً عَلَىٰ خَلْقِكَ
a proof over Your creation,
وَنُوراً تَخْرُقُ بِهِ ٱلظُّلَمَ
a light by which You pierce the darknesses,
وَقُدْوَةً تُدْرَكُ بِهَا ٱلْهِدَايَةُ
an exemplar through whom guidance is attained,
وَشَفِيعاً تُنَالُ بِهِ ٱلْجَنَّةُ
and an intercessor through whom Paradise is reached.
اَللَّهُمَّ وَكَمَا أَخَذَ فِي خُشُوعِهِ لَكَ حَظَّهُ
O God, just as he took his share of humility before You
وَٱسْتَوْفَىٰ مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ نَصِيبَهُ
and received his full portion of awe of You,
فَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ أَضْعَافَ مَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ وَلِيٍّ
bless him many times over what You have blessed any friend
ٱرْتَضَيْتَ طَاعَتَهُ
whose obedience You approved
وَقَبِلْتَ خِدْمَتَهُ
and whose service You accepted;
وَبَلِّغْهُ مِنَّا تَحِيَّةً وَسَلاَماً
convey to him from us greeting and peace,
وَآتِنَا فِي مُوَالاَتِهِ مِنْ لَدُنْكَ فَضْلًا وَإِحْسَاناً
and grant us, through our devotion to him, grace and kindness from Your presence,
وَمَغْفِرَةً وَرِضْوَاناً
forgiveness and good pleasure;
إِنَّكَ ذُو ٱلْمَنِّ ٱلْقَدِيمِ
surely You are the Lord of ancient bounty
وَٱلصَّفْحِ ٱلْجَمِيلِ
and gracious forbearance.
