Ziyarah of Imam Musa al-Kazim
At the door and on entering
Perform ghusl and come to the shrine with calm and dignity. At its door say:
اَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ٱللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
God is great, God is great;
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ ٱللَّهُ وَٱللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
there is no god but God, and God is great.
اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَىٰ هِدَايَتِهِ لِدِينِهِ
Praise be to God for His guidance to His religion
وَٱلتَّوْفِيقِ لِمَا دَعَا إِلَيْهِ مِنْ سَبِيلِهِ
and for success in what He has called to of His way.
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ أَكْرَمُ مَقْصُودٍ
O God, You are the most generous of those sought
وَأَكْرَمُ مَأْتِيٍّ
and the most generous of those visited.
وَقَدْ أَتَيْتُكَ مُتَقَرِّباً إِلَيْكَ
I have come to You seeking nearness to You
بِٱبْنِ بِنْتِ نَبِيِّكَ
through the son of the daughter of Your Prophet,
صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰ آبَائِهِ ٱلطَّاهِرِينَ
Your blessings be upon him, upon his pure forefathers
وَأَبْنَائِهِ ٱلطَّيِّبِينَ
and his good sons.
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad;
وَلاَ تُخَيِّبْ سَعْيِي
do not let my effort be in vain,
وَلاَ تَقْطَعْ رَجَائِي
do not cut off my hope,
وَٱجْعَلْنِي عِنْدَكَ وَجِيهاً
and make me honoured before You
فِي ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ وَمِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ
in this world and the hereafter, and among those brought near.
Then enter, right foot first, and say:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ
In the name of God and by God,
وَفِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ
in the way of God
وَعَلَىٰ مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
and upon the creed of the Messenger of God,
صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ
may God bless him and his family.
اَللَّهُمَّ ٱغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ
O God, forgive me and my parents
وَلِجَمِيعِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ
and all the believing men and women.
At the door of the dome, ask permission:
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ
May I enter, O Messenger of God?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا نَبِيَّ ٱللَّهِ
May I enter, O Prophet of God?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنَ عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ
May I enter, O Muhammad son of ‘Abd Allah?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا أَمِيرَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
May I enter, O Commander of the Faithful?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ ٱلْحَسَنُ
May I enter, O Abu Muhammad al-Hasan?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْحُسَيْنُ
May I enter, O Aba ‘Abd Allah al-Husayn?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ عَلِيُّ بْنَ ٱلْحُسَيْنِ
May I enter, O Abu Muhammad ‘Ali son of al-Husayn?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
May I enter, O Abu Ja‘far Muhammad son of ‘Ali?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ جَعْفَرُ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ
May I enter, O Aba ‘Abd Allah Ja‘far son of Muhammad?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ يَا أَبَا ٱلْحَسَنِ مُوسَىٰ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ
May I enter, O my master, O Abu al-Hasan Musa son of Ja‘far?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ يَا أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ
May I enter, O my master, O Abu Ja‘far,
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
may I enter, O my master Muhammad son of ‘Ali?
Then enter and say four times:
اَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
God is great.
The ziyarah of Imam Musa al-Kazim
Then stand facing the grave, with the qibla between your shoulders, and say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ وَلِيِّهِ
Peace be upon you, O friend of God and son of His friend.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حُجَّةَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ حُجَّتِهِ
Peace be upon you, O proof of God and son of His proof.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا صَفِيَّ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ صَفِيِّهِ
Peace be upon you, O pure one of God and son of His pure one.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَمِينَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ أَمِينِهِ
Peace be upon you, O trustee of God and son of His trustee.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نُورَ ٱللَّهِ فِي ظُلُمَاتِ ٱلْأَرْضِ
Peace be upon you, O light of God in the darkness of the earth.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا إِمَامَ ٱلْهُدَىٰ
Peace be upon you, O Imam of guidance.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا عَلَمَ ٱلدِّينِ وَٱلتُّقَىٰ
Peace be upon you, O banner of religion and piety.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا خَازِنَ عِلْمِ ٱلنَّبِيِّينَ
Peace be upon you, O treasurer of the knowledge of the prophets.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا خَازِنَ عِلْمِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
Peace be upon you, O treasurer of the knowledge of the messengers.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نَائِبَ ٱلْأَوْصِيَاءِ ٱلسَّابِقِينَ
Peace be upon you, O deputy of the earlier successors.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مَعْدِنَ ٱلْوَحْيِ ٱلْمُبِينِ
Peace be upon you, O source of the clear revelation.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا صَاحِبَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ٱلْيَقِينِ
Peace be upon you, O possessor of certain knowledge.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا عَيْبَةَ عِلْمِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
Peace be upon you, O treasure-chest of the knowledge of the messengers.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلإِمَامُ ٱلصَّالِحُ
Peace be upon you, O righteous Imam.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلإِمَامُ ٱلزَّاهِدُ
Peace be upon you, O ascetic Imam.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلإِمَامُ ٱلْعَابِدُ
Peace be upon you, O worshipping Imam.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلإِمَامُ ٱلسَّيِّدُ ٱلرَّشِيدُ
Peace be upon you, O Imam, master, rightly guided.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمَقْتُولُ ٱلشَّهِيدُ
Peace be upon you, O one slain, O martyr.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ وَصِيِّهِ
Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of God and son of his successor.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مَوْلاَيَ مُوسَىٰ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ
Peace be upon you, O my master Musa son of Ja‘far,
وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
and the mercy of God and His blessings.
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ بَلَّغْتَ عَنِ ٱللَّهِ مَا حَمَّلَكَ
I bear witness that you conveyed from God what He entrusted to you,
وَحَفِظْتَ مَا ٱسْتَوْدَعَكَ
guarded what He placed in your keeping,
وَحَلَّلْتَ حَلاَلَ ٱللَّهِ
made lawful what God made lawful,
وَحَرَّمْتَ حَرَامَ ٱللَّهِ
forbade what God forbade,
وَأَقَمْتَ أَحْكَامَ ٱللَّهِ
upheld the rulings of God,
وَتَلَوْتَ كِتَابَ ٱللَّهِ
recited the Book of God,
وَصَبَرْتَ عَلَىٰ ٱلْأَذَىٰ فِي جَنْبِ ٱللَّهِ
bore harm patiently for the sake of God
وَجَاهَدْتَ فِي ٱللَّهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهِ
and strove in God’s way as He deserves to be striven for
حَتَّىٰ أَتَاكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ
until certainty came to you.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ مَضَيْتَ
I bear witness that you passed away
عَلَىٰ مَا مَضَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آبَاؤُكَ ٱلطَّاهِرُونَ
upon what your pure forefathers passed away upon,
وَأَجْدَادُكَ ٱلطَّيِّبُونَ
and your good ancestors,
ٱلْأَوْصِيَاءُ ٱلْهَادُونَ
the guiding successors,
ٱلْأَئِمَّةُ ٱلْمَهْدِيُّونَ
the rightly guided Imams.
لَمْ تُؤْثِرْ عَمًى عَلَىٰ هُدًى
You never preferred blindness to guidance
وَلَمْ تَمِلْ مِنْ حَقٍّ إِلَىٰ بَاطِلٍ
nor inclined from truth to falsehood.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ نَصَحْتَ لِلَّهِ
I bear witness that you gave sincere counsel to God,
وَلِرَسُولِهِ وَلِأَمِيرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
to His Messenger and to the Commander of the Faithful,
وَأَنَّكَ أَدَّيْتَ ٱلْأَمَانَةَ
that you discharged the trust
وَٱجْتَنَبْتَ ٱلْخِيَانَةَ
and avoided betrayal,
وَأَقَمْتَ ٱلصَّلاَةَ
established the prayer,
وَآتَيْتَ ٱلزَّكَاةَ
gave the alms,
وَأَمَرْتَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ
enjoined what is right,
وَنَهَيْتَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنْكَرِ
forbade what is wrong,
وَعَبَدْتَ ٱللَّهَ مُخْلِصاً
and worshipped God sincerely,
مُجْتَهِداً مُحْتَسِباً
striving and seeking His reward,
حَتَّىٰ أَتَاكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ
until certainty came to you.
فَجَزَاكَ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلإِسْلاَمِ وَأَهْلِهِ
So may God reward you on behalf of Islam and its people
أَفْضَلَ ٱلْجَزَاءِ وَأَشْرَفَ ٱلْجَزَاءِ
with the best reward and the noblest reward.
أَتَيْتُكَ يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ زَائِراً
I have come to you, O son of the Messenger of God, as a visitor,
عَارِفاً بِحَقِّكَ
knowing your right,
مُقِرّاً بِفَضْلِكَ
acknowledging your excellence,
مُحْتَمِلًا لِعِلْمِكَ
bearing your knowledge,
مُحْتَجِباً بِذِمَّتِكَ
sheltering in your protection,
عَائِذاً بِقَبْرِكَ
seeking refuge at your grave,
لاَئِذاً بِضَرِيحِكَ
taking shelter at your shrine,
مُسْتَشْفِعاً بِكَ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ
seeking your intercession with God,
مُوَالِياً لِأَوْلِيَائِكَ
befriending your friends,
مُعَادِياً لِأَعْدَائِكَ
opposing your enemies,
مُسْتَبْصِراً بِشَأْنِكَ
aware of your standing
وَبِٱلْهُدَىٰ ٱلَّذِي أَنْتَ عَلَيْهِ
and of the guidance you are upon,
عَالِماً بِضَلاَلَةِ مَنْ خَالَفَكَ
aware of the error of those who opposed you
وَبِٱلْعَمَىٰ ٱلَّذِي هُمْ عَلَيْهِ
and of the blindness they are in.
بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي
May my father and mother,
وَنَفْسِي وَأَهْلِي
myself, my family,
وَمَالِي وَوَلَدِي
my wealth and my children be ransomed for you,
يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
O son of the Messenger of God.
أَتَيْتُكَ مُتَقَرِّباً بِزِيَارَتِكَ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ تَعَالَىٰ
I have come to you seeking nearness, through visiting you, to God the Exalted,
وَمُسْتَشْفِعاً بِكَ إِلَيْهِ
and seeking your intercession with Him.
فَٱشْفَعْ لِي عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ
So intercede for me with your Lord
لِيَغْفِرَ لِي ذُنُوبِي
that He forgive me my sins,
وَيَعْفُوَ عَنْ جُرْمِي
pardon my offence,
وَيَتَجَاوَزَ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِي
overlook my misdeeds,
وَيَمْحُوَ عَنِّي خَطِيئَاتِي
wipe away my faults,
وَيُدْخِلَنِي ٱلْجَنَّةَ
admit me into Paradise,
وَيَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيَّ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ
bestow on me what He is worthy of,
وَيَغْفِرَ لِي وَلِآبَائِي
and forgive me, my forefathers,
وَلِإِخْوَانِي وَأَخَوَاتِي
my brothers and my sisters
وَلِجَمِيعِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ
and all the believing men and women
فِي مَشَارِقِ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَغَارِبِهَا
in the east and the west of the earth,
بِفَضْلِهِ وَجُودِهِ وَمَنِّهِ
by His grace, His generosity and His favour.
Then lean over the grave, kiss it, rest your cheeks on it and ask for what you wish; then move to the side of the head and say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مَوْلاَيَ
Peace be upon you, O my master,
يَا مُوسَىٰ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ
O Musa son of Ja‘far,
وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
and the mercy of God and His blessings.
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ ٱلإِمَامُ ٱلْهَادِي
I bear witness that you are the guiding Imam
وَٱلْوَلِيُّ ٱلْمُرْشِدُ
and the directing friend,
وَأَنَّكَ مَعْدِنُ ٱلتَّنْزِيلِ
that you are the source of revelation
وَصَاحِبُ ٱلتَّأْوِيلِ
and the master of its interpretation,
وَحَامِلُ ٱلتَّوْرَاةِ وَٱلإِنْجِيلِ
the bearer of the Torah and the Gospel,
وَٱلْعَالِمُ ٱلْعَادِلُ
the just and knowing one
وَٱلصَّادِقُ ٱلْعَامِلُ
and the truthful one who acts.
يَا مَوْلاَيَ أَنَا أَبْرَأُ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ مِنْ أَعْدَائِكَ
O my master, I disassociate myself before God from your enemies
وَأَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ بِمُوَالاَتِكَ
and seek nearness to God through love for you.
فَصَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ
So may God bless you,
وَعَلَىٰ آبَائِكَ وَأَجْدَادِكَ وَأَبْنَائِكَ
your forefathers, your ancestors, your sons,
وَشِيعَتِكَ وَمُحِبِّيكَ
your followers and those who love you,
وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
and the mercy of God and His blessings.
