Ziyarah of Imam al-Hasan al-‘Askari
After the ziyarah of his father Imam al-Hadi, stand at his grave and say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مَوْلاَيَ
Peace be upon you, O my master,
يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ ٱلْحَسَنُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ
O Abu Muhammad al-Hasan son of ‘Ali,
ٱلْهَادِيَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِي
the guide, the rightly guided,
وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
and the mercy of God and His blessings.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ أَوْلِيَائِهِ
Peace be upon you, O friend of God and son of His friends.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حُجَّةَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ حُجَجِهِ
Peace be upon you, O proof of God and son of His proofs.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا صَفِيَّ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ أَصْفِيَائِهِ
Peace be upon you, O chosen one of God and son of His chosen ones.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا خَلِيفَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ خُلَفَائِهِ وَأَبَا خَلِيفَتِهِ
Peace be upon you, O vicegerent of God, son of His vicegerents and father of His vicegerent.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ خَاتَمِ ٱلنَّبِيِّينَ
Peace be upon you, O son of the Seal of the Prophets.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ سَيِّدِ ٱلْوَصِيِّينَ
Peace be upon you, O son of the master of the successors.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ أَمِيرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ سَيِّدَةِ نِسَاءِ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ
Peace be upon you, O son of the mistress of the women of the worlds.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ ٱلْأَئِمَّةِ ٱلْهَادِينَ
Peace be upon you, O son of the guiding Imams.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ ٱلْأَوْصِيَاءِ ٱلرَّاشِدِينَ
Peace be upon you, O son of the rightly guided successors.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا عِصْمَةَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
Peace be upon you, O safeguard of the God-fearing.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا إِمَامَ ٱلْفَائِزِينَ
Peace be upon you, O Imam of the triumphant.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رُكْنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Peace be upon you, O pillar of the believers.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا فَرَجَ ٱلْمَلْهُوفِينَ
Peace be upon you, O relief of the distressed.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ ٱلْأَنْبِيَاءِ ٱلْمُنْتَجَبِينَ
Peace be upon you, O heir of the select prophets.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا خَازِنَ عِلْمِ وَصِيِّ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O keeper of the knowledge of the successor of the Messenger of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلدَّاعِي بِحُكْمِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O one who calls by the judgement of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاطِقُ بِكِتَابِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O one who speaks with the Book of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حُجَّةَ ٱلْحُجَجِ
Peace be upon you, O proof of proofs.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا هَادِيَ ٱلْأُمَمِ
Peace be upon you, O guide of the nations.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱلنِّعَمِ
Peace be upon you, O guardian of blessings.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا عَيْبَةَ ٱلْعِلْمِ
Peace be upon you, O treasury of knowledge.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سَفِينَةَ ٱلْحِلْمِ
Peace be upon you, O ark of forbearance.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا ٱلإِمَامِ ٱلْمُنْتَظَرِ
Peace be upon you, O father of the awaited Imam,
ٱلظَّاهِرَةِ لِلْعَاقِلِ حُجَّتُهُ
whose proof is evident to the thinking mind,
وَٱلثَّابِتَةِ فِي ٱلْيَقِينِ مَعْرِفَتُهُ
whose recognition is firm in certainty,
ٱلْمُحْتَجَبِ عَنْ أَعْيُنِ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ
who is veiled from the eyes of the oppressors,
وَٱلْمُغَيَّبِ عَنْ دَوْلَةِ ٱلْفَاسِقِينَ
hidden from the rule of the corrupt,
وَٱلْمُعِيدِ رَبُّنَا بِهِ ٱلإِسْلاَمَ جَدِيداً بَعْدَ ٱلِانْطِمَاسِ
and through whom our Lord will restore Islam anew after it has been effaced,
وَٱلْقُرْآنَ غَضّاً بَعْدَ ٱلِانْدِرَاسِ
and the Qur’an fresh after it has worn away.
أَشْهَدُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ أَنَّكَ أَقَمْتَ ٱلصَّلاَةَ
I bear witness, O my master, that you established the prayer,
وَآتَيْتَ ٱلزَّكَاةَ
gave the alms,
وَأَمَرْتَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ
enjoined what is right,
وَنَهَيْتَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنْكَرِ
forbade what is wrong,
وَدَعَوْتَ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ
called to the way of your Lord
بِٱلْحِكْمَةِ وَٱلْمَوْعِظَةِ ٱلْحَسَنَةِ
with wisdom and good exhortation,
وَعَبَدْتَ ٱللَّهَ مُخْلِصاً
and worshipped God sincerely
حَتَّىٰ أَتَاكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ
until certainty came to you.
أَسْأَلُ ٱللَّهَ بِٱلشَّأْنِ ٱلَّذِي لَكُمْ عِنْدَهُ
I ask God, by the standing you have with Him,
أَنْ يَتَقَبَّلَ زِيَارَتِي لَكُمْ
to accept my visit to you,
وَيَشْكُرَ سَعْيِي إِلَيْكُمْ
to reward my effort towards you,
وَيَسْتَجِيبَ دُعَائِي بِكُمْ
to answer my prayer through you,
وَيَجْعَلَنِي مِنْ أَنْصَارِ الْحَقِّ
and to make me among the helpers of the truth,
وَأَتْبَاعِهِ وَأَشْيَاعِهِ
its followers and adherents,
وَمَوَالِيهِ وَمُحِبِّيهِ
its friends and lovers.
وَٱلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
And peace be upon you, and the mercy of God and His blessings.
Then kiss his grave, rest your right cheek on it, then your left, and say:
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ
O God, bless our master Muhammad and his household,
وَصَلِّ عَلَىٰ ٱلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ
and bless al-Hasan son of ‘Ali,
ٱلْهَادِي إِلَىٰ دِينِكَ
the guide to Your religion
وَٱلدَّاعِي إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِكَ
and the caller to Your way,
عَلَمِ ٱلْهُدَىٰ
the banner of guidance,
وَمَنَارِ ٱلتُّقَىٰ
the lighthouse of piety,
وَمَعْدِنِ ٱلْحِجَىٰ
the mine of intellect,
وَمَأْوَىٰ ٱلنُّهَىٰ
the shelter of understanding,
وَغَيْثِ ٱلْوَرَىٰ
the rain for all mankind,
وَسَحَابِ ٱلْحِكْمَةِ
the cloud of wisdom,
وَبَحْرِ ٱلْمَوْعِظَةِ
the sea of exhortation,
وَوَارِثِ ٱلْأَئِمَّةِ
the heir of the Imams,
وَٱلشَّهِيدِ عَلَىٰ ٱلْأُمَّةِ
the witness over the community,
ٱلْمَعْصُومِ ٱلْمُهَذَّبِ
the protected, the refined,
وَٱلْفَاضِلِ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِ
the virtuous, the one brought near,
وَٱلْمُطَهَّرِ مِنَ ٱلرِّجْسِ
purified from all uncleanness,
ٱلَّذِي وَرَّثْتَهُ عِلْمَ ٱلْكِتَابِ
to whom You bequeathed the knowledge of the Book,
وَأَلْهَمْتَهُ فَصْلَ ٱلْخِطَابِ
whom You inspired with decisive speech,
وَنَصَبْتَهُ عَلَماً لِأَهْلِ قِبْلَتِكَ
set up as a landmark for the people of Your qibla,
وَقَرَنْتَ طَاعَتَهُ بِطَاعَتِكَ
whose obedience You joined with obedience to You,
وَفَرَضْتَ مَوَدَّتَهُ عَلَىٰ جَمِيعِ خَلِيقَتِكَ
and love for whom You made obligatory upon all Your creation.
اَللَّهُمَّ فَكَمَا أَنَابَ بِحُسْنِ ٱلإِخْلاَصِ فِي تَوْحِيدِكَ
O God, just as he turned to You with fine sincerity in affirming Your oneness,
وَأَرْدَىٰ مَنْ خَاضَ فِي تَشْبِيهِكَ
overthrew whoever plunged into likening You to creatures,
وَحَامَىٰ عَنْ أَهْلِ ٱلإِيمَانِ بِكَ
and defended those who believe in You,
فَصَلِّ يَا رَبِّ عَلَيْهِ صَلاَةً
so bless him, O Lord, with a blessing
يَلْحَقُ بِهَا مَحَلَّ ٱلْخَاشِعِينَ
by which he attains the station of the humble
وَيَعْلُو فِي ٱلْجَنَّةِ
and rises high in Paradise
بِدَرَجَةِ جَدِّهِ خَاتَمِ ٱلنَّبِيِّينَ
to the rank of his grandfather, the Seal of the Prophets;
وَبَلِّغْهُ مِنَّا تَحِيَّةً وَسَلاَماً
convey to him from us greeting and peace,
وَآتِنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ فِي مُوَالاَتِهِ
and grant us from Your presence, through our devotion to him,
فَضْلًا وَإِحْسَاناً
grace and kindness,
وَمَغْفِرَةً وَرِضْوَاناً
forgiveness and good pleasure;
إِنَّكَ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَظِيمٍ
surely You are the Lord of great bounty
وَمَنٍّ جَسِيمٍ
and immense favour.
