Ziyarat Warith
Ghusl and approaching the shrine
When you perform the ghusl of ziyarah (in the Euphrates), say:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ
In the name of God and by God.
اَللَّهُمَّ ٱجْعَلْهُ نُوراً وَطَهُوراً
O God, make it a light and a purification,
وَحِرْزاً وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ
a protection and a healing from every illness,
وَسُقْمٍ وَآفَةٍ وَعَاهَةٍ
sickness, affliction and harm.
اَللَّهُمَّ طَهِّرْ بِهِ قَلْبِي
O God, purify my heart through it,
وَٱشْرَحْ بِهِ صَدْرِي
open up my breast through it
وَسَهِّلْ لِي بِهِ أَمْرِي
and make my affair easy for me through it.
Then put on clean clothes and pray two rak‘as. Walk towards the sanctuary (al-Ha’ir) calmly, with short steps, humble and in tears, saying “Allahu akbar” and “La ilaha illa Allah”, praising God and sending blessings on the Prophet and on al-Husayn. At the gate of the Ha’ir stand and say:
اَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيراً
God is great, most great;
وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيراً
praise be to God abundantly;
وَسُبْحَانَ ٱللَّهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلاً
glory be to God morning and evening.
اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِي هَدَانَا لِهٰذَا
Praise be to God who guided us to this;
وَمَا كُنَّا لِنَهْتَدِيَ لَوْلاَ أَنْ هَدَانَا ٱللَّهُ
we would not have been guided had God not guided us.
لَقَدْ جَاءَتْ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ
The messengers of our Lord came with the truth.
Then say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O Messenger of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نَبِيَّ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O Prophet of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا خَاتَمَ ٱلنَّبِيِّينَ
Peace be upon you, O Seal of the Prophets.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سَيِّدَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
Peace be upon you, O master of the messengers.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حَبِيبَ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O beloved of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَمِيرَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Faithful.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سَيِّدَ ٱلْوَصِيِّينَ
Peace be upon you, O master of the successors.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا قَائِدَ ٱلْغُرِّ ٱلْمُحَجَّلِينَ
Peace be upon you, O leader of those with shining faces and limbs.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ فَاطِمَةَ
Peace be upon you, O son of Fatima,
سَيِّدَةِ نِسَاءِ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ
mistress of the women of the worlds.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ ٱلأَئِمَّةِ مِنْ وُلْدِكَ
Peace be upon you and upon the Imams from your descendants.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَصِيَّ أَمِيرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Peace be upon you, O successor of the Commander of the Faithful.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلصِّدِّيقُ ٱلشَّهِيدُ
Peace be upon you, O truthful one, O martyr.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا مَلاَئِكَةَ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O angels of God
ٱلْمُقِيمِينَ فِي هٰذَا ٱلْمَقَامِ ٱلشَّرِيفِ
who dwell in this noble station.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا مَلاَئِكَةَ رَبِّي
Peace be upon you, O angels of my Lord
ٱلْمُحْدِقِينَ بِقَبْرِ ٱلْحُسَيْنِ عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلاَمُ
who surround the grave of al-Husayn, peace be upon him.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنِّي أَبَداً
Peace be upon you from me for ever,
مَا بَقِيتُ وَبَقِيَ ٱللَّيْلُ وَٱلنَّهَارُ
as long as I remain and the night and day remain.
Then say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O Aba ‘Abd Allah.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ أَمِيرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful.
عَبْدُكَ وَٱبْنُ عَبْدِكَ وَٱبْنُ أَمَتِكَ
Your servant, son of your servant and son of your bondwoman,
ٱلْمُقِرُّ بِٱلرِّقِّ وَٱلتَّارِكُ لِلْخِلاَفِ عَلَيْكُمْ
acknowledging his servitude, giving up all opposition to you,
وَٱلْمُوَالِي لِوَلِيِّكُمْ وَٱلْمُعَادِي لِعَدُوِّكُمْ
befriending your friend and opposing your enemy,
قَصَدَ حَرَمَكَ وَٱسْتَجَارَ بِمَشْهَدِكَ
has made for your sanctuary, sought refuge at your shrine,
وَتَقَرَّبَ إِلَيْكَ بِقَصْدِكَ
and sought nearness to you by coming to you.
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ
May I enter, O Messenger of God?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا نَبِيَّ ٱللَّهِ
May I enter, O Prophet of God?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا أَمِيرَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
May I enter, O Commander of the Faithful?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا سَيِّدَ ٱلْوَصِيِّينَ
May I enter, O master of the successors?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا فَاطِمَةُ سَيِّدَةَ نِسَاءِ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ
May I enter, O Fatima, mistress of the women of the worlds?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ
May I enter, O my master, O Aba ‘Abd Allah?
أَأَدْخُلُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
May I enter, O my master, O son of the Messenger of God?
If your heart is moved and your eyes shed tears, that is the sign of permission. Then enter and say:
اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلْوَاحِدِ ٱلأَحَدِ
Praise be to God, the One, the Unique,
ٱلْفَرْدِ ٱلصَّمَدِ
the Single, the Self-Sufficient,
ٱلَّذِي هَدَانِي لِوِلاَيَتِكَ
who guided me to your guardianship,
وَخَصَّنِي بِزِيَارَتِكَ
favoured me with visiting you
وَسَهَّلَ لِي قَصْدَكَ
and made my way to you easy.
Ziyarat Warith (at the head of the grave)
Then come to the door of the dome, stand on the side of the head and say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ آدَمَ صَفْوَةِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O heir of Adam, the chosen of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ نُوحٍ نَبِيِّ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O heir of Noah, the prophet of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O heir of Abraham, the friend of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ مُوسَىٰ كَلِيمِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O heir of Moses, the one to whom God spoke.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ عِيسَىٰ رُوحِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O heir of Jesus, the spirit of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ مُحَمَّدٍ حَبِيبِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O heir of Muhammad, the beloved of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ أَمِيرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلاَمُ
Peace be upon you, O heir of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ ٱلْمُصْطَفَىٰ
Peace be upon you, O son of Muhammad al-Mustafa.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ عَلِيٍّ ٱلْمُرْتَضَىٰ
Peace be upon you, O son of ‘Ali al-Murtada.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ فَاطِمَةَ ٱلزَّهْرَاءِ
Peace be upon you, O son of Fatima al-Zahra’.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ خَدِيجَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ
Peace be upon you, O son of Khadija al-Kubra.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ثَارَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ ثَارِهِ
Peace be upon you, O blood of God unavenged and son of His blood unavenged,
وَٱلْوِتْرَ ٱلْمَوْتُورَ
O one wronged and left alone.
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ أَقَمْتَ ٱلصَّلاَةَ
I bear witness that you established the prayer,
وَآتَيْتَ ٱلزَّكَاةَ
gave the alms,
وَأَمَرْتَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ
enjoined what is right,
وَنَهَيْتَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنْكَرِ
forbade what is wrong,
وَأَطَعْتَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ حَتَّىٰ أَتَاكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ
and obeyed God and His Messenger until certainty came to you.
فَلَعَنَ ٱللَّهُ أُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكَ
So may God curse a people who killed you;
وَلَعَنَ ٱللَّهُ أُمَّةً ظَلَمَتْكَ
may God curse a people who wronged you;
وَلَعَنَ ٱللَّهُ أُمَّةً سَمِعَتْ بِذٰلِكَ فَرَضِيَتْ بِهِ
and may God curse a people who heard of this and were pleased with it.
يَا مَوْلاَيَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ
O my master, O Aba ‘Abd Allah,
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ كُنْتَ نُوراً فِي ٱلأَصْلاَبِ ٱلشَّامِخَةِ
I bear witness that you were a light in exalted loins
وَٱلأَرْحَامِ ٱلْمُطَهَّرَةِ
and purified wombs;
لَمْ تُنَجِّسْكَ ٱلْجَاهِلِيَّةُ بِأَنْجَاسِهَا
the Ignorance did not defile you with its impurities
وَلَمْ تُلْبِسْكَ مِنْ مُدْلَهِمَّاتِ ثِيَابِهَا
nor clothe you in its dark garments.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ مِنْ دَعَائِمِ ٱلدِّينِ
I bear witness that you are of the pillars of the religion
وَأَرْكَانِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
and the supports of the believers.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ ٱلإِمَامُ ٱلْبَرُّ ٱلتَّقِيُّ
I bear witness that you are the Imam — righteous, God-fearing,
ٱلرَّضِيُّ ٱلزَّكِيُّ
well-pleasing, pure,
ٱلْهَادِي ٱلْمَهْدِيُّ
guiding and rightly guided.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ ٱلأَئِمَّةَ مِنْ وُلْدِكَ كَلِمَةُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ
I bear witness that the Imams from your descendants are the word of piety,
وَأَعْلاَمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰ
the signposts of guidance,
وَٱلْعُرْوَةُ ٱلْوُثْقَىٰ
the firmest handhold
وَٱلْحُجَّةُ عَلَىٰ أَهْلِ ٱلدُّنْيَا
and the proof over the people of this world.
وَأُشْهِدُ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلاَئِكَتَهُ
I call God to witness, and His angels,
وَأَنْبِيَاءَهُ وَرُسُلَهُ
His prophets and His messengers,
أَنِّي بِكُمْ مُؤْمِنٌ وَبِإِيَابِكُمْ
that I believe in you and in your return,
مُوقِنٌ بِشَرَائِعِ دِينِي وَخَوَاتِيمِ عَمَلِي
certain of it, by the laws of my religion and the seals of my deeds;
وَقَلْبِي لِقَلْبِكُمْ سِلْمٌ
my heart is at peace with your hearts
وَأَمْرِي لأَمْرِكُمْ مُتَّبِعٌ
and my affairs follow your command.
صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَلَىٰ أَرْوَاحِكُمْ
The blessings of God be upon you and upon your souls,
وَعَلَىٰ أَجْسَادِكُمْ وَعَلَىٰ أَجْسَامِكُمْ
upon your bodies and your forms,
وَعَلَىٰ شَاهِدِكُمْ وَعَلَىٰ غَائِبِكُمْ
upon the present among you and the absent,
وَعَلَىٰ ظَاهِرِكُمْ وَعَلَىٰ بَاطِنِكُمْ
upon the outward and the inward.
Then lean over the grave, kiss it and say:
بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O son of the Messenger of God;
بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ
may my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Aba ‘Abd Allah.
لَقَدْ عَظُمَتِ ٱلرَّزِيَّةُ
Great indeed is the tragedy,
وَجَلَّتِ ٱلْمُصِيبَةُ بِكَ عَلَيْنَا
and grievous is the calamity of your loss for us
وَعَلَىٰ جَمِيعِ أَهْلِ ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ وَٱلأَرْضِ
and for all the dwellers of the heavens and the earth.
فَلَعَنَ ٱللَّهُ أُمَّةً أَسْرَجَتْ وَأَلْجَمَتْ
So may God curse a people who saddled, bridled
وَتَهَيَّأَتْ لِقِتَالِكَ
and made ready to fight you.
يَا مَوْلاَيَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ
O my master, O Aba ‘Abd Allah,
قَصَدْتُ حَرَمَكَ
I have made for your sanctuary
وَأَتَيْتُ إِلَىٰ مَشْهَدِكَ
and come to your shrine.
أَسْأَلُ ٱللَّهَ بِٱلشَّأْنِ ٱلَّذِي لَكَ عِنْدَهُ
I ask God, by the standing you have with Him
وَبِٱلْمَحَلِّ ٱلَّذِي لَكَ لَدَيْهِ
and the rank you hold in His presence,
أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
to send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad
وَأَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مَعَكُمْ فِي ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ
and to place me with you in this world and the hereafter.
Then pray two rak‘as at the head, reciting whatever you like. After the prayer say:
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي صَلَّيْتُ وَرَكَعْتُ وَسَجَدْتُ
O God, I have prayed, bowed and prostrated
لَكَ وَحْدَكَ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ
to You alone, who have no partner,
لأَنَّ ٱلصَّلاَةَ وَٱلرُّكُوعَ وَٱلسُّجُودَ
for prayer, bowing and prostration
لاَ تَكُونُ إِلاَّ لَكَ
are only for You,
لِأَنَّكَ أَنْتَ ٱللَّهُ لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ
for You are God; there is no god but You.
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad,
وَأَبْلِغْهُمْ عَنِّي أَفْضَلَ ٱلسَّلاَمِ وَٱلتَّحِيَّةِ
convey to them from me the best of greetings and salutations,
وَٱرْدُدْ عَلَيَّ مِنْهُمُ ٱلسَّلاَمَ
and return to me their greeting.
اَللَّهُمَّ وَهَاتَانِ ٱلرَّكْعَتَانِ
O God, these two rak‘as
هَدِيَّةٌ مِنِّي إِلَىٰ مَوْلاَيَ
are a gift from me to my master
ٱلْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَلَيْهِمَا ٱلسَّلاَمُ
al-Husayn son of ‘Ali, peace be upon them both.
اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَيْهِ
O God, bless Muhammad and him,
وَتَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي وَأْجُرْنِي عَلَىٰ ذٰلِكَ
accept this from me and reward me for it
بِأَفْضَلِ أَمَلِي وَرَجَائِي فِيكَ
according to the best of my hope and expectation in You
وَفِي وَلِيِّكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
and in Your friend, O Friend of the believers.
‘Ali al-Akbar
Then move to the foot of the grave, stand at the head of ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn and say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ نَبِيِّ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O son of the Prophet of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ أَمِيرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ ٱلْحُسَيْنِ ٱلشَّهِيدِ
Peace be upon you, O son of al-Husayn the martyr.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلشَّهِيدُ
Peace be upon you, O martyr.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمَظْلُومُ وَٱبْنُ ٱلْمَظْلُومِ
Peace be upon you, O wronged one, son of the wronged one.
لَعَنَ ٱللَّهُ أُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكَ
May God curse a people who killed you;
وَلَعَنَ ٱللَّهُ أُمَّةً ظَلَمَتْكَ
may God curse a people who wronged you;
وَلَعَنَ ٱللَّهُ أُمَّةً سَمِعَتْ بِذٰلِكَ فَرَضِيَتْ بِهِ
and may God curse a people who heard of this and were pleased with it.
Then lean over the grave, kiss it and say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنَ وَلِيِّهِ
Peace be upon you, O friend of God and son of His friend.
لَقَدْ عَظُمَتِ ٱلْمُصِيبَةُ
Great indeed is the calamity,
وَجَلَّتِ ٱلرَّزِيَّةُ بِكَ عَلَيْنَا
and grievous is the tragedy of your loss for us
وَعَلَىٰ جَمِيعِ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ
and for all the Muslims.
فَلَعَنَ ٱللَّهُ أُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكَ
So may God curse a people who killed you;
وَأَبْرَأُ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ وَإِلَيْكَ مِنْهُمْ
I disassociate myself, before God and before you, from them.
The martyrs
Then go out by the door at the feet of ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, turn towards the martyrs and say:
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا أَوْلِيَاءَ ٱللَّهِ وَأَحِبَّاءَهُ
Peace be upon you, O friends of God and His beloved ones.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا أَصْفِيَاءَ ٱللَّهِ وَأَوِدَّاءَهُ
Peace be upon you, O chosen ones of God and His dear ones.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا أَنْصَارَ دِينِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O helpers of the religion of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا أَنْصَارَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O helpers of the Messenger of God.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا أَنْصَارَ أَمِيرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Peace be upon you, O helpers of the Commander of the Faithful.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا أَنْصَارَ فَاطِمَةَ سَيِّدَةِ نِسَاءِ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ
Peace be upon you, O helpers of Fatima, mistress of the women of the worlds.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا أَنْصَارَ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ
Peace be upon you, O helpers of Abu Muhammad
ٱلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ٱلْوَلِيِّ ٱلنَّاصِحِ
al-Hasan son of ‘Ali, the friend, the sincere counsellor.
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا أَنْصَارَ أَبِي عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ
Peace be upon you, O helpers of Aba ‘Abd Allah.
بِأَبِي أَنْتُمْ وَأُمِّي
May my father and mother be ransomed for you!
طِبْتُمْ وَطَابَتِ ٱلأَرْضُ ٱلَّتِي فِيهَا دُفِنْتُمْ
You were pure, and pure is the earth in which you are buried,
وَفُزْتُمْ فَوْزاً عَظِيماً
and you have attained a great triumph.
فَيَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ مَعَكُمْ فَأَفُوزَ مَعَكُمْ
Would that I had been with you, so that I might triumph with you!
Then return to the head of al-Husayn and pray much for yourself, your family, your parents and your brothers: at his shrine no prayer is turned away.
